I'm retired and would like help with my relationship

It is often thought that a counsellor will tell you what to do or how to behave. This could not be further from the truth Relate counsellors are impartial. We listen to both parties, and explore with them what they really want from their relationship. We ensure that each side has a voice and a chance to have their say. We try to clarify the situation so that both parties can see where things have gone wrong. We are not here to blame or to take sides, nor are we here to force a couple to stay together or to force them to separate.
Instead, what we do is listen to what they want and help them to achieve that in the most amicable way. Very often what we find in a couple relationship that is not working well is that the communication has either broken down or is not working as well as it could be. At Relate we believe that relationship and communication skills can be learnt.
By creating a safe and confidential environment, it gives the individual or couple a chance to talk about how they feel and what they want from their relationship. We will explore the concerns that they may have and help them to gain insight and understanding into their concern. Once things are much clearer, it is easier for them to decide on the changes that they want.
We can help the couple to empathise with each other, to realise what it is like to be in the other’s shoes. By talking honestly about their inner most feelings, we help them to learn to accept each other as well as themselves and to build a stronger and happier relationship together.
