Kids' Turn

Relate has been awarded funding from the Department for Education to deliver a new programme called Kids’ Turn, sourced from a successful programme already running in the United States. Relate will be leading this programme in partnership with National Family Mediation.  This course will be running at Relate Cambridge, Relate Northumberland and Tyneside and Relate Mid Thames and Buckinghamshire (please see below for contact details). For more information about National Family Mediation, visit their website www.nfm.org.uk or call 0300 4000 636.

What is Kids’ Turn?

Focusing on the wellbeing of the children, this course will give the whole family the opportunity to learn new skills to be able to cope with separation or divorce. The skills learned will also help in other situations beyond the family setting.

How long is the course?

The course consists of six 90 minute sessions which will be conducted over six weeks.

How much will it cost to attend?

The course is free of charge (small admin fee may apply - please ask when you contact your local Centre).

Who will be on the course?

The best way for the Kids’ Turn programme to work is if parents and children attend together. The adults are usually split into two groups of about ten people in each, and two parents are attending together will always be put in separate groups. Children are separated out into children’s groups according to age (5-7 year olds; 8-10 year olds and teenagers).

Who will be delivering the course?

The course is delivered by our fully accredited counsellors and mediators, with volunteers also helping to make the sessions run smoothly.

What will happen on the course?

We will explore some important “emotional intelligence” concepts in five areas:

•    Know Yourself
•    Manage Yourself
•    Motivation
•    Know Others
•    Manage Relationships

We will also explore how children may be responding to separation or divorce, and support parents to develop ways of communicating to help with future co-parenting.
