JUN 15 2012 / Relate's response to the Govenment's equal marriage consultation
Relate is responding to this consultation through this statement rather than answering the individual questions as it is not a campaigning organisation. Relate’s mission is to develop and support healthy relationships by helping couples, families and individuals to make relationships work better, to deliver inclusive services and to help the public and policymakers improve their understanding of relationships and what makes them flourish.
Relate has a strong commitment to equality and diversity and Relate and its practitioners operate within an ethical framework that prohibits discrimination and puts the needs of those to whom we offer services first. Relate believes in the importance of stable, long-term relationships, regardless of gender, and aims to provide effective services supporting these relationships for every section of the community. The evidence says that what matters most is whether relationships are of high quality, are secure and are sustainable rather than their legal form. Relate will therefore support all those in marriages and civil partnerships, whatever the outcome of this consultation process, as well as continuing to support people in relationships which do not have a legal status.
