Increase in clients disclosing sexual abuse.

Following the high-profile Jimmy Savile allegations Relate, like many organisations, has seen an increase in the number of people making contact who mention childhood sexual abuse and abuse in general.

Relate Counsellors and Sex Therapists can help people with how the sexual abuse affects their adult relationship(s).

Relate Sex Therapist Ammanda Major said:

“Many people disclose during counselling that they experienced sexual abuse, either as a child or earlier in their adult lives. Living with such difficult experiences and feelings can devastate intimate and family relationships but we also see that recovery is possible.  Our counsellors can help people make sense of how abuse has affected their lives and help them to rebuild their relationships. Where it would be useful our counsellors will help clients get specialist support.”

Relate has been supporting families, couples and individuals to deal with the effects of abuse.  In the last year we know of at least 400 cases where previous abuse or current abuse as been mentioned in the counselling room.

Relate has a clear Child Protection & Safeguarding Policy and robust procedures that must be followed by all Relate personnel if issues of child protection, including childhood sexual abuse, are disclosed or suspected.
