Specialisation: Counselling Young People

Relate offers individual counselling for young people, aged 10 - 25 whose parents, step-parents or adult carers are in conflict, or going through a separation process or have already separated. There are over 40 Relate locations where counsellors work with young people; many deliver the service in local secondary schools.

Applying to train
If you are already working at a Relate near you and wish to apply to train as Counsellor for Young People you need to hold the Relate Graduate Certificate or the Relate certificate in couple counselling. You should also, preferably, have experience of working with young people in contexts inside and outside of Relate, teaching, youth work or social work.
If you are an external applicant you need relevant counselling training at minimum Diploma level, 200+ hours of supervised counselling and experience of working therapeutically with young people.

You can then apply for selection for the Relate Counselling for Young People training programme.

Training
The training currently comprises two 2-day modules.

Child Protection
You will receive further training from your local Social Services department or Area Child Protection Committee. This training is provided locally to ensure you learn about the referral procedures of your social services department. You will also establish links with your local Police Child Protection Unit.
