Relate helped nearly 4,900 people with sexual problems last year.

What’s it like being a Relate Trustee?

Maureen Forbes, Trustee and Treasurer for Relate Milton Keynes talks about her experiences:

How did you get involved?
Word of mouth. There's a shortage of trustees but that can be said for most charities. People seem reluctant to give up free time. One initiative that may be considered is a set term for trustees so volunteers know they're only committed for specific periods. This would also encourage a regular flow of new blood.

Has it been a steep learning curve?
In terms of learning the aims and objectives of Relate, yes. The financial aspect is reasonably straightforward. Grasping the specific issues that apply to Relate can prove demanding. If we run out of volunteer receptionists for example, who is going to operate the phones? That sort of problem can put great strain on everyone in the organisation.

Are you ever daunted by having to speak at meetings?
That's never bothered me because I'm accustomed to presenting seminars. It's not something to worry about. It's a skill and like everything else, it can be mastered with practice. So don't be put off if you're not used to speaking. Relate is very supportive and new members aren't expected to know the workings of the organisation straight away.

What's the hardest part of the role?
Knowing there are so many distressed people in Milton Keynes and that we can't help everyone. Relate is a fantastic organisation but securing funding is no easy task.

Would you recommend becoming a trustee to other people?
Without hesitation. It's not a particularly demanding role and you're helping people. In fact, we desperately need more male trustees, an issue that is prevalent across the volunteer sector. So come on guys, give it a go!
