Course Objectives
The core skills for working with couples are the same for couples of all sexualities. In a heterosexual-oriented society, however, and within a profession that's done its fair share of pathologising lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people, it's important for practitioners to consider a variety of issues and themes involved in working with LGB people in couples.
The workshop will include input and opportunities to explore the themes of: heterosexism and homophobia; LGB affirmative therapy; LGB cultural awareness; specific issues that arise when working with lesbian, gay and bisexual couples; issues that arise where one person in an apparently heterosexual relationship comes out as lesbian, gay or bisexual; and opportunities for practitioners to consider their own feelings and value base for working with LGB people. The workshop will be participatory and engaging.
