Using web or internet based tools is a convenient way to talk to a counsellor; Relate Dorset & South Wiltshire is now offering web facilitated access to a counsellor.

If you are unable to travel to one of our centres or can't make the time, or unable to make arrangements for child care or even the dog, it's an easy way to fit a counselling session into your life.

If you and your partner live in different places webcam counselling is an easy way for you both to take part in a session from separate locations.

If you would prefer to enage with a counsellor and have the response available to you in an email which you can refer to at your leisure then email counselling might be right for you.

What is Webcam Counselling?

Webcam Counselling is just like having face-to-face counselling, except you talk to a trained counsellor online using a secure video link (similar to Skype or FaceTime). You can have counselling with your partner or on your own.

All you need to use our webcam counselling is a computer, laptop or device with a webcam; it works with iPhone.

Once you've booked a session we'll email you the details of your booking with a link to access your session.  The email will also include web protocol which is designed to provide a secure and appropriate space in which to undertake your session.  If you and your partner are in different places each will receive a unique email and link.

At the time of your appointment just click the link and you’ll be connected to a video call with your counsellor.

We use Zoom to provide our Webcam Counselling.  If you've never used Zoom before when you click the link you may be asked to install a plugin to connect your camera with your web browser.  Follow the on-screen instructions and select 'Run' to install.  No other software is installed to your device.

We use Zoom because:

  • it's available to users with lower bandwidths
  • you don't need to download software or set up an account
  • it meets a very high standard of confidentiality and data security
  • it will not collect your personal information
  • sessions are not recorded.
  • video calls take place using Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption to ensure they remain confidential.

When you make a booking you will be asked for an email address, if you want to keep these details private please use an email address that only you have access to.

Zoom uses cookies.  However, these will not contain identifiable information about you or your counselling session.

If you want to delete all traces of Zoom you'll need to:

  • delete your internet history for the day you had counselling
  • delete any cookies Zoom has left on your device. You can get more information about deleting cookies on the Information Commissioner's Office website

What is Email Counselling?

Our Email Counselling service enables you to work with a Relate counsellor via email over a period of time. You can send an email with your problem to a counsellor and they'll reply to you.

It's like face to face counselling but you can manage the exchange at your own pace and access the email reply whenever you like. You'll be allocated a fully trained counsellor who will work with you for as long as you need help, and they will send each reply within four working days of receiving your email.

Email Counselling costs the same as Relationship Counselling and you and your counsellor can exchange up to 3 emails for the price of a single session.  How many 'equivalent' sessions you require can be discussed with your counsellor, but each reply will be helpful in itself, and it is for you to decide how much help you want.

How will I get my reply?

Once you have registered and made your initial payment you will then be assigned a counsellor and given an email address to contact them on.  Your reply will be delivered to your email address, so make sure that you are the only person who can access that address.  You might want to set up a new email address so that you can be sure it will be private.

Remember that no matter how you choose to contact us or what your worry is, what you tell us is confidential and our trained counsellors have the skills and experience to help you.
