Relationship support for health, social care and emergency services personnel

Find out from our Chief Executive Sarah Hall about our work to support the relationship health of front-line workers following the pandemic.

From February 2022 until May 2023, we worked in partnership with the Cheshire and Merseyside Resilience Hub, to provide relationship counselling to local NHS, social care and emergency services staff working or living in Cheshire and Merseyside. Resilience Hubs were set up across the UK in response to Covid-19, to support the wellbeing of staff on the frontline of tackling the pandemic.

We’re proud to have provided almost 600 sessions of free counselling through this partnership, supporting just under 200 key workers and their families with their relationships. Feedback from these clients shows how important this work was:

  • 76% said that their situation was better after counselling
  • 80% said that their coping strategies had improved
  • 84% said their mental wellbeing had improved
  • 36% said their physical wellbeing had improved
  • 20% of those who had been taking time off work had returned to work
  • 96% said that they would both recommend us to others and use our services again.

Here’s just a small selection of comments:

“My therapist was outstanding. I feel better able to identify the issues I’m facing and work towards resolving them. I feel for the first time in a long time that I have clarity of mind.”

“It was good to talk to somebody else who wasn’t in the middle of all this. The counsellor made me feel that what I was going through, all the emotions, were normal and part of the process. That helped me to know that I wasn’t going crazy and could make it through the situation.”

“I cannot thank our counsellor enough for the impact that the sessions have had on us as a couple and on our relationship.”

Now that this project has completed and the resilience hub funding is no longer available, we want to do whatever we can to continue supporting the relationship health of those working in the NHS, social care, and emergency services, and have partnered with the Blue Light Card to offer a 20% discount.
