Having a baby can an expensive business. Money Helper has calculated looking after an infant could cost as much as £7,200 in their first year, excluding childcare.
But just because you’ll be spending a bit more, that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to make your money go further. With a little bit of planning ahead, you can avoid unnecessary spending.
Here’s Money helper’s five top tips for keeping costs low when you’re expecting.
Think before you buy
Do you really need an expensive travel system, or a Moses basket? Ask other mothers and see what they used.
Also consider whether you’re getting the item as cheap as you can. Shopping around is always worthwhile. Shop in the sales, or shop online. You can often save money this way as opposed to heading straight for high-street stores or supermarkets and paying full price.
Make sure you’re getting any benefits you’re entitled to
If you’re on a low income, you could be eligible for a grant to buy baby things, and vouchers to help you and your baby eat healthily.
Most families are also entitled to help from the government. These include free NHS prescriptions and Child Benefit.
Don’t forget to also think about Statutory Maternity Pay for after your baby is born.

Avoid stockpiling and consider re-selling
Have you ever bought lots of the same product to find out that it’s not what you really needed? Baby products are no different. Avoid stockpiling lots of nappies and wipes before the baby arrives. Also, if you’re buying baby equipment, hang on to the boxes if you’ve got the space, and avoid taking the labels off baby clothes before you’ve used them. You may find you don’t need them and could sell them on.
