Aidan Jones, Chief Executive at leading relationships charity Relate, said:
“Yesterday was a rollercoaster for the future of the conversion therapy ban and the government’s u-turn of its first u-turn was absolutely the right decision. Highly trained and respected therapists like Relate’s and others can help people to explore their feelings about themselves, their sexuality and gender in a non-judgemental, safe way, but those conversations must be handled appropriately.
“Relate very much retains our position that ‘therapy’ which aims to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity must be outlawed. We’re very concerned that this long-awaited legislation will not protect some of those who most need it if trans people are excluded. We’re calling on the government to make a third u-turn as soon as possible here.”
