In a world increasingly dominated by technology, it’s easy to forget the human efforts behind the innovations we use everyday. Today, we’re shining a spotlight on the dedicated team that’s brought to life a groundbreaking AI tool designed to support parents and co-parents. This isn’t just any AI – it's an empathetic companion build with the wisdom of clinicians and the hearts of parents in mind.
A thoughtful approach to training AI
Our AI was trained using clinically approved documents and safeguarding information, ensuring a robust and reliable foundation. We've meticulously documented and continuously update this training data, focusing heavily on the concept of mentalisation. This approach means that the AI is not just a cold, logical machine; it’s programmed to understand and consider how a child thinks and feels. It encourages parents to do the same, fostering a deep emotional connection and understanding in their interactions.
Prioritising user safety
User safety is our paramount concern. From the outset of any conversation, users are clearly informed that they’re interacting with an AI. We know that there are some things the bot might not respond to as expected, and we’ve implemented systems to identify and address these situations promptly. Our bespoke safeguarding training dataset includes keywords, phrases, and patterns that might signal potential concerns. When such issues arise, the AI provides guidance on how to seek help from external agencies.
Insights from the team
Ed Wilkinson, Senior Digital Consultant at IE Digital, shared, “The whole team at IE is immensely proud of what we've achieved with Relate in creating these new, innovative, AI-powered tools to help reduce parental conflict. Throughout the project, we've engaged not only with counsellors and clinicians to ensure the safety and accuracy of information but also with an array of target users to gain a rich understanding of their backgrounds and needs. Ultimately, we've been able to create a suite of highly accessible tools that will make a meaningful difference to parents, children, and families.”
Jude Gordon, Relate's Supporting Families Programme Manager, emphasised the AI's unique perspective-shifting capabilities: “Often, parents and carers are thinking about things from their own perspective. Our ‘in-the-middle bot’ can help them to see things through the child’s eyes, leading to informed decisions which put their child’s needs first. We believe that by leveraging advanced technology, we can provide co-parents with the resources they need to navigate their journeys with greater ease and confidence.”
A Vision for the Future
The team is not only proud of the tools they've developed but also hopeful for their future impact. "We are really proud to be able to offer these tools for parents, carers, and practitioners. We hope that we can develop them further and that people will access them before seeking legal advice, as we strongly believe that where possible, it is beneficial for families to resolve separation and conflict without involving the family court system."
This project is more than just a technological achievement; it's a testament to the power of combining human empathy with cutting-edge technology. The team behind this AI tool has worked tirelessly to ensure it serves as a compassionate, insightful, and safe resource for parents navigating the complexities of co-parenting. As we look forward, we're excited about the potential of these tools to bring about positive change in the lives of families everywhere.
