Counselling was worth every penny, as now my wife and I have a fantastic relationship and are totally in love again

Peter, Relate Relationship Counselling client

Where they started

Peter and Nicky had been together for six years, with a young daughter, when Peter decided to call an end to their relationship.

They had been arguing a lot, and he’d had enough, he felt the relationship was over.

The three months when we separated were the worst of my life, we were living together in the same house, for the sake of our daughter, the strain was enormous.

Peter had started to move out of the house when suddenly, Nicky became ill. It was then that Peter realised he didn’t want to lose her.

Seeking help

Like many people, Peter had reservations about the benefits of counselling and was reluctant to try it out.

Counselling was always a swear word to me, I’ve always dealt with everything before without help, why would now be any different?

Nicky had to take sick leave from work and Peter was spending more time at home looking after their daughter. Focusing on his daughter and supporting Nicky whilst she was ill made Peter think again about counselling and booked to meet with a Relate Counsellor.

As the sessions progressed, both Nicky and Peter were surprised by what was uncovered.

The counselling helped us a lot. It made us understand how it felt when we said certain things to each other. I realised that while we had been arguing before we weren’t really listening to each other. It was hard but the counsellor made us work on understanding each other. We didn’t want to change each other as we still loved the people were, we just needed to change the way we talked about things without upsetting each other.

Where they are now

This new level of understanding propelled Nicky and Peter into a relationship they could have only dreamed of just a few months earlier.

People often associate counselling with lying on a sofa and spilling your darkest, deepest secrets to a total stranger, that couldn’t be further from the truth, Relate Counsellors are really friendly and supportive.
